Rabbit Island

Rabbit Island

As promised, I’m writing about where we’ve been exploring since moving to Nelson.

One of the first places we visited was Rabbit Island — a peninsula near our home. Here’s where it is:

Where you see Mate’s face icon — that’s where we live.

Rabbit Island

We’ve really grown to love this place. It’s a gorgeous pine-covered island with a fantastic ocean beach, full of driftwood in amazing shapes. The kids spent hours building forts and climbing the massive log piles.

The beach goes on for kilometres. You can walk and walk and barely see another person. The sand is golden, the water is cold but swimmable in summer, and the pohutukawa trees at the edges bloom bright red in December.

It’s become our regular Sunday spot. Pack a picnic, load the bikes, and spend the afternoon there. The best kind of New Zealand day.
